Taipei, Taiwan – A Chinese fighter jet crashed during a training mission to parachute pilots safely, state media said.
A short report by Xinhua News Agency’s Communications Agency said on Saturday it happened near the town of China’s southernmost island town, where there are numerous air forces and naval bases, radar stations and other military infrastructure aimed at reinforcing the Chinese administration’s claims against the vast South China Sea.
The report did not provide further details except that the cause of the accident was under investigation.
Despite the Chinese military being very secretive and having the largest navy and standing army in the world, there are rare reports of accidents.
China has not fought in real wars in 35 years, but it is expanding its military footprint along with pushing to overcome the West in modern technology. They are also moving to stealth fighters and other crafts that have the same abilities as those used by the US.
