The 38-year-old country singer said the doctor recently discovered mass in his right thyroid.
A month after cancelling his headline tour, Paul Cauthen, a Texas-born country singer known for his soulful baritone voice, revealed that he has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
Cauthen, 38, shared the news on a recent Instagram video and noted that she decided to shorten her tour in Des Moines, Iowa, to prioritize health.
The “Black on Black” singer quickly returned to her home in Tyler, Texas, to recover. A few weeks later, he decided to go to Cooper Quest at Cooper Quenick, about 100 miles in Dallas.
Cauthen’s scan revealed that his heart, lungs and liver are healthy. However, doctors noticed a “small place” in their thyroid, and were called “hot spots.”
“They discovered a mass in my right thyroid and told me that it was papillary cancer and that it was cancer,” recalled the singer-songwriter.
“Looking back at that, you know, you know, taking the time to slowly get on the road to be healthy actually saved my life,” Cauthen said.
“I spent a lot of time reflecting and understanding that life is short and precious,” he continued, thanking the fans for their unwavering support.
“I’m going to tour again, I’m sing on stage again. I’m never doing it. I’m getting new music, I’m going to keep writing, I’m going to keep doing what I know I have to do. And I’m a ship on stage and I know that God has me here.”
Health War
In January, Cauthen embarked on a headline tour in support of his latest album, “Black on Black,” released in October 2024.
However, the country singer announced that he would be holding a postponed show in Bloomington, Indiana, and Lexington, Kentucky later that month after becoming ill with an upper respiratory tract infection following a performance at the Lyman Auditorium in Nashville on January 25th.
On February 6th, Cauthen’s team announced that the singer has cancelled the rest of the shows in the near future and is back in Texas to deal with mental and physical health.
Cauthen’s health update was filled with pours of support from his dedicated followers.

Cauthen played alongside Texas musician David Beck and began his music career as half of the folk rock duo Sons of Fathers.
The pair released their self-titled debut, “Sons of Fathers,” in 2011, and two years later they released their sophomore album, “Burning Days.”
Called “Big Velvet” because of his distinctive sound, Cauthen continued to pursue a solo career in 2016 with his debut record “My Gospel.”
He later released “Room 41” (2019), “Country Conging Down” (2022), and his latest album, “Black on Black” (2024).
Cauthen lives in East Texas with his wife, Elizabeth Cauthen, whom he married in 2021.
