TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – The new Florida bill requires some elementary school students to learn to write cursive writing.
The bill, HB 921, requires that all public schools provide written and written instruction to students in second to fifth grades. By the end of fifth grade, all students “expert proficiency in reading and writing cursive through evaluation of written works,” the bill states.
Students will meet at Florida Capitol against amendment petition reform
Students must be able to write the above letters and lowercase letters in cursive form, write words and sentences that are easy to read with appropriate intervals and alignment, and read cursive.
If passed, the bill will come into effect on July 1st.
Currently, students are taught cursive writing at the beginning of third grade at the end of fifth grade. However, schools are not required to allow students to read and understand cursive writing.
Florida law does not require schools to provide cursive exams or evaluations.
