TALHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — Gov. Ron DeSantis hopes that more Floridians will benefit from the “MySafe Florida Home” program. And when the 2025 legislative meeting began this week in Tallahassee, there will be new debate about funding the program.
“We recently proposed to fund people who are not on the waitlist during a special session in Congress.

Both my safe Florida home and my safe Florida condo program are widely popular.
Currently, the first week of the book’s legislative session, 15 invoices have been filed surrounding the My Safe Florida Home and Condo program.
State representatives Lindsay Cross and D-ST. Petersburg is making another attempt to expand its programs, including flood mitigation grants.
“I think it’s really important that we invest in our residents and help them make sure they live in safe homes. It’s devastating to see people lose their possessions and memories during these hurricanes,” Cross said. “We want to make our community more resilient, and it’s a step forward to making this happen.”
In addition to the invoice array, Desantis has proposed $600 million in state budget to invest in housing and condo grant initiatives following the second consecutive year of funding shortages in the My Safe Florida Home program.
“We’ve passed a program that Congress has done, they’ve been tested, they’re waiting for testing, they’re eligible, they’re currently requiring grants, but the program has run out of money, so we’re funding the waitlist and making a $100 million recovery in the future,” Desantis said.
And as governors and state legislators promote the popularity of each program, questions and concerns have risen about the lack of funds.
“Can we keep up with the aggregate demand for it? We want to make sure that people on the waitlist get it done so that they can make the improvements they need,” DeSantis said.
News Channel 8 on your side has received these questions and concerns from state legislators who introduced the bill on the issue.
When asked if the state was doing enough to fund these programs, D-Parkland president Christine Hunschofsky shared that there is always more room.
“There’s more room for it, but we need to make sure we’re not overly expanding our budget,” says Hunschofsky. “Of course, we’re always looking for more funding. We need to balance funding this program with all the other needs in Florida.”
Hunschofsky sponsors the law to make funding easier for Floridians to access funding through the My Safe Florida Condo program.
With a large number of bills filed so far at the current legislative meeting, homeowners are one step closer to accessing my safe Florida home grant, but will that money disappear quickly, just like in the past?
