Indian River County, Fla. (WFLA) – The 87-year-old man from Vermont passed away Sunday after being attacked by a truck while trying to save a turtle on a Florida highway, Florida Highway Patrol said.

The Troopers said the 87-year-old man was moving south in the middle lane of Interstate 95 just north of County Route 512 in Sebastian around 4:20pm, when he was crossing the southbound lane to retrieve a turtle from the road.

Miami woman with a black Mazda CX-9 slowed down to avoid attacking the man, but Port St. Lucie man with a Dodge 3500 pickup truck couldn’t slow the truck down in time and hit the back of a Miami woman’s car, FHP said.

After the crash, Mazda ran up the road, entered the shoulder of the grass and hit the fence.

The truck driver continued to go south and attacked an 87-year-old pedestrian, the Troopers said.

The pedestrian died at the scene. No one else was injured.

Other details were not available immediately.
