NEW YORK (AP) – Approximately 429,000 portable power banks are recalled as they can overheat and potentially ignite while charging your phone.
According to a notice issued Thursday by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, Brooklyn, New York-based Casely recalls some of its “powerpods” after reporting 51 times overheating, magnifying or catching fires on its charger lithium-ion batteries.
The currently envisioned Casely Power Pod with a battery capacity of 5000mAh can be identified by model number E33a. The wireless phone charger was manufactured in China, with Thursday’s notification notes being manufactured and sold on Amazon, getCasely.com and other websites from March 2022 to September 2024.
Consumers who owned these chargers came in a variety of colors and prints, but were prompted to stop using them immediately.
Targets will receive a new “UL Certified Power Pod,” a FAQ for Casely’s website notes. The company also says that all other battery packs not included in the recall are safe to use.
“Casely is committed to customer safety and has taken proactive steps to remove potentially incorrect products from distribution due to its abundant care,” Casely wrote in its recall announcement. “If your Powerpod qualifies, we’ll replace it with a new unit for free.”
To receive a free exchange, consumers must fill out the form online and submit a photo of their own recall charger with the date written with the word “recall” and a permanent marker. However, CPSC and Casely emphasize that lithium-ion battery devices should not be thrown into trash or general recycle bins. Instructs consumers to search for local guidance for disposal.
